New board member announced at annual meeting

Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative held its Annual Meeting of the Members on Tuesday, March 29 in Fort Scott, Kan., where it was announced that Dean David had won the election to join the cooperative's board of Directors.

David defeated incumbent G.C. Smith, winning the vote 265 to 194. In announcing the vote, Board President Harry Oehlert thanked Smith for his 25 years of dedicated service to the cooperative.

Those in attendance heard from representatives of the cooperative, who gave updates on the status of the utility and electric industry. Board President Oehlert spoke about challenges in the industry, and the need to be alert to legislation on the state and federal level that has the potential to greatly impact electric rates. Heartland CEO Dale Coomes reviewed the year's achievements at the cooperative, and outlined programs that support efficiency and help members fund energy improvements in their homes. Director of Finance and Administration Angie Erickson reviewed the cooperative's financial status.

A wide variety of prizes were given to many of the 60 members in attendance, and an ice cream social was held following the closing of the meeting.
