Heartland’s Home Energy Calculator has all these answers, and more.
Just recently made available to Heartland REC members, the Home Energy Calculator is a sophisticated tool that makes it possible for members to do free online energy audits of their home.
The tool is available through HREC’s website, and asks members to input a variety of information about their home, including size, heating and cooling system, number of occupants, thermostat settings, and information about appliances.
Using Heartland’s rates and weather data from Southeast Kansas, the Home Energy Calculator is then able to report where those energy dollars go.
The tool is most valuable when members take the next step and see how changes affect their monthly bill. By entering new data (such as a more efficient heating system, better sealed windows, newer appliances or an adjusted thermostat) the tool then does a new calculation showing the savings possible.
With this tool members can discover the payback for a heat pump, learn about how new appliances can save money, and see the savings to be found with a new water heater.
The Home Energy Calculator also includes separate forms for calculating the usage of appliances, different television sets, and light bulbs.
The report can even tell you how much power the new plasma and LCD televisions consume while they are turned off.
