Heartland closes lobby to public, suspends disconnection
Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative announced on Tuesday, March 17 that the cooperative will not disconnect residential and business customers for non-payment through May 1, 2020, while communities are facing challenges from Coronavirus.
“These next few weeks will be difficult times for everyone, and we want to do everything we can to assure our consumer-members that they will have uninterrupted power to their homes, farms and businesses as we face this challenge together,” said Heartland CEO Mark Scheibe.
This temporary pause of our disconnection policy does not remove a consumer-member’s responsibility to pay bills, and it does not cancel any bills. It is intended to allow customers dealing with uncertainty to continue to receive service, while making partial payments or other payment arrangements. We strongly encourage anyone whose income is not directly impacted by the Coronavirus response to continue to make utility payments in order to avoid large bills in the future. Automatic payments and bank drafts that our members have previously set up will not be affected.
To protect the health and well-being of our employees, we are also closing our three offices to walk-in lobby traffic effective immediately. Members are encouraged to pay online through our SmartHub member portal and mobile app, or pay by phone by calling 1-888-999-5517. Payment drop boxes are available at all three office locations.
“Electric service is a critical service to our community, and we trust that those we serve will understand that these inconvenient measures will protect our employees,” said Scheibe. “We are doing everything in our power to ensure that we can provide uninterrupted power to those we serve.”
Heartland is also taking significant measures behind-the-scenes to isolate employees and comply with all CDC recommendations during this global pandemic.
