Position Summary

The Journeyman Lineman position is responsible for providing manpower, knowledge and workmanship which are necessary to perform job duties for the proper construction, maintenance, and operation of the electric system. This position makes correct application and use of all materials and equipment furnished in order to provide efficient, reliable service to the member in the operation and maintenance of the electric system.

Heartland will also consider third- or fourth-year apprentices for this position.

Heartland is a financially sound, member-owned, electric distribution cooperative providing service with 11,200 meters on over 3,800 miles of line. Heartland provides electric service to its members, which are located in parts of 12 different counties in Southeast Kansas. Heartland’s headquarters is located in Girard, Kansas, the county seat of Crawford County. Qualifications:

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and hold a journeyman lineman certificate or four years equivalent experience plus a certificate from a power Lineworker vo-tech or on the job training program. Completion of the Merchants Training program or an approved apprenticeship program is required. Heartland will also consider third- or fourth-year apprentices for this position. Must have and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License without an L or Z restriction is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs all required construction, maintenance, and operations on energized and non-energized portions of the system without supervision.
  • Maintains skills in switching operations for maintenance and/or emergencies.
  • Required to know how to read maps, prepare and interpret staking sheets and prepare required reports.
  • Operates and applies all circuit and sectionalizing devices and electrical devices used on the system in a proper and safe manner.
  • Responsible for effective and safe operating methods in the use of rubber gloves and sleeves.
  • Performs after-hour duty assignments and participates in the Cooperative's "on-call" rotation as directed by his/her supervisor.
  • Conducts self in a manner which will lead to the best possible working relationship between the Cooperative and other members of the crew or other employees of the Cooperative.
  • Responsible for being properly clothed and equipped while maintaining belt, hooks and other personal tools in a safe condition.
  • Complies with the Cooperative's Safety Rules and uses safe working practice and methods.
  • Responsible for the proper care of company equipment, tools and property.
  • Complies with all traffic laws, rules and regulations while operating a Cooperative vehicle and practices proper traffic procedures.
  • Responds to member and consumer inquiries and resolves problems and/or directs them to the supervisor or appropriate personnel; maintains good relations in all contacts with the general public.
  • Climbs poles and utilizes lineman tools while working on poles.
  • Receives and accepts training, instruction and advice from assigned supervisor and cooperates with him/her in performing assigned tasks.
  • Participates in job site tailgate discussions and monthly safety meetings.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
